Our Mission

We are three mothers dedicated to the empowerment of women, the dignity of all children and to being of service in the world.  Watching the beauty and joy these WWooBies™ bring to our own children, we are committed to participation in creating a world that works for every child, one baby at a time. 25% of all of our profits go directly to nonprofit organizations serving endangered children.  (Children's Causes)

The Whole World Baby Story

When I returned from working in the refugee camps on the Chad/Darfur border I was blessed immediately with the conception of my daughter Ava. One day when Ava was 3 months old her grandma or "NanaCita" as we call her decided to put one of my scarves on her head. NanaCita had seen all the pictures of the beautiful children in Africa with their head wraps but never imagined Ava would actually keep it on. To our surprise, not only did she keep it on but she refused to take it off. We quickly fastened the scarf with a homemade device to make it fit her tiny head. Ava wore these scarves everywhere we went and everyone we met was desperate to know where we had purchased them. We’d often hear things such as, “Oh, I want another baby just put a head wrap on her!” At our weekly baby class Ava shared her scarf with a beautiful baby named Adeline. Adeline’s mom, Jama Williamson was sure that Adeline would tear it off her head because she is a very spirited, mobile and adventurous child (she was crawling at 5 months!). Sure enough, Adeline wore it all class just like Ava! After class Jama and I began talking about mothering and life and our hopes to provide for our girls. Jama mentioned the head wrap business would be a great idea and I agreed. I told her I had thought about it but as I rushed off to naptime I said, "Who has time to start a business"?

Enter Adrianne Ferree, my partner in many nonprofit projects. The next day Adrianne and I were scratching our heads (once again) trying to find a way to raise funds for a documentary about peace that we were making for The Peace Alliance. I looked at Ava sitting there with that scarf of hers' and at Adrianne who can make anything a reality and an idea was born! We'd make these unique baby clothes - head scarves for babies, raise money for our film and donate a percentage of the proceeds to support children in need. The business had to be socially conscience, responsible and not just another baby product. But wait! Jama had the idea the day before, how could we move forward without asking her to join us? We quickly called her to see if she was really interested (figuring she'd never be as crazy as we were) and to our shock she'd already sewn 5 scarves that morning and was working on several designs. We drove straight to Jama's house so she and Adrianne could meet and within minutes we knew we were a team. We were a perfect fit: Me with my grand visions, Adrianne with her practical expertise and Jama with her inspired determination. Jama had modeled several scarves after Ava's simple style and The Ava design was born. She also added a tie and a longer scarf tail for Adeline and The Adeline design was born. Adrianne, Jama and I decided to create a business model that would allow us to dedicate more time to our families, serve the world's children, get our movie about peace made and save the world from hideous baby headbands and bows in the process! Of course Amanda, Adrianne's teenage daughter and her friends wanted to wear the head scarves and support the world's children too. With this request the third design, The Amanda was created with a little extra pizzazz. When we shared the ideas with some friends who had boys, they asked for scarves to be made for them too! So the The Adam was designed to pair with the Ava.

Meetings were held on kitchen floors with Ava always at breast, Adeline always on the run and Amanda always on the phone. We thought about micro loans and empowering women in remote villages. Instead right smack in the middle of the recession we took out an ad in Craig's List and started interviewing local US sewers who were in alignment with our mission and needed some empowerment of their own. More meetings were held this time at local coffee houses with more babes at breast, tots crawling around tables and teenagers needing rides. How would we ever get anything done? A decision was made in the name of getting started on a shoe string budget and in an effort to reduce, reuse and recycle. Our 1st WWooBies™, as we like to affectionately call them, were made from prewashed old bed sheets, outgrown baby clothes and clothes that fit us before the babes came along! With a dedication to safety and sustainability we'd use non toxic stamps, minimal packaging and recycled or seed paper for our business cards, displays and labels. We got busy with the fun stuff like choosing our initial nonprofit organizations dedicated to supporting the safety and betterment of children's lives around the world. How fun to research organizations helping children and knowing we'd be some part of that effort! We decided to go beyond the 10% standard of giving and donate 25% of our proceeds to clearly demonstrate our commitment.

With that our journey began, One
WWooBie™ at a Time.
